Just a little while ago the Space Shuttle Endeavour lifted off into space from the Kennedy Space Center on its last mission, the second-to-last mission for any Space Shuttle. Like many people I watched the liftoff (from my computer at home) and was a bit wistful to see space exploration as I have known it since my childhood nearing its end. But I have to say, when I think about the end of the Space Shuttle program, I&8217;m really not that sorry to see it come to a close.

Oh, it&8217;s not that I&8217;m not a fan of space exploration (I even made NASA-space-mission-themed cookies last week for my office), but the Space Shuttle never lived up to its original concept, and it&8217;s been sucking up a lot of money over the years, money that could have paid for even more discoveries than have already been made.

When the Space Shuttle was conceived in the 1960s, before we had even landed on the Moon, proponents were making claims that a reusable space vehicle, one that could land like an airplane, could be cheaper to operate on a per-launch basis and could launch as frequently as once a week. But the reality was far different.

There are actually two ways of merging your Voice number with Sprint service. If you're on Sprint, but haven't dived into Google Voice yet, you can sign up for Google Voice using your Sprint number. You're then a Voice user without need of a funky new number, so your number can ring multiple phones, you can make or receive calls through Gmail, phone and text through Voice's web site and apps, and access other Voice features like any other customer.

If you're a Voice user who's on Sprint, or heading to it, you can replace your Sprint number with your existing Voice number. That way, your phone's core functions of calling and sending text messages are then made with Google Voice by default—no extra Voice app needed. Personally, that's the feature this editor digs most, as it means you can use your Google Voice number with apps that work through SMS. A Google representative said that standard SMS rates still apply when texting outside the Voice app, however, so it's a give and take.

Google says its Sprint integration will be “rolled out gradually to all Google Voice users” after its launch. You can leave your email address at the main Voice/Sprint site to be notified when it's available for you.

Talk about terrible timing. This week saw the launch of Mortal Kombat, Portal 2 and SOCOM 4, all of which have an online component. SOCOM 4 is a Playstation 3 exclusive geared mainly towards online play, and includes big incentives to buy the game new. In addition to disabling online play, the PSN outage affects the Qriocity music service, Netflix, MLB.tv and any other service requiring a PSN login.

Reuters (NYSE: TRI) is officially launching an online service offering live video access to breaking and scheduled news events to outside publishers as it attempts to challenge the Associated Press and burnish its profile as more than provider and financial news and data.

The service, dubbed Live Stream, has been tested with launch partners The Tribune Company and Australia&8217;s Fairfax Media. It got its big debut last week when the NYTimes.com (NYSE: NYT) made use of the live video from the Royal Wedding in the UK, even though the New York Times has not officially signed on as a regular client. (Though the NYT is considering doing so, one source told paidContent.)
