For all the hype leading up to this, countless broadcasts and a sprawling nationwide campaign, the airwaves of Christian station Family Radio are largely silent with May 21, 2011 finally here.

Harold Camping, president of Family Radio and a multimillionaire, has also been quiet, as the hours tick and signs of an apocalypse are nowhere to be found.

Reuters reports Family Radio has been airing “recorded church music, devotionals and life advice unrelated to the apocalypse” throughout today. The station's website typically allows you to listen live, but the feature has been having problems today, likely due to server overload.

The Rapture: May 21, 2011 6:00 PM Local Time

rapture may 21 2011 rapture may 21 2011
rapture may 21 2011 rapture may 21 2011

We have no doubt that the world will end – eventually. We do however, have our doubts about tomorrow being that specific day, simply because so many prophets have made the same failed predictions for hundreds of years.

Camping, who has made a living from his California based Family Radio Christian network since 1958 and has assetstotalingin excess of 25 million, has been preaching since 2008 that the end of days would occur on exactly this day, at exactly this hour. While the exact number of his followers is not known, Camping&8217;s success shows that they number in the tens of thousands world-wide.

Many of them believe tomorrow is it. It&8217;s the beginning of the end. According to Camping&8217;s interpretation of biblical prophecy, May 21 will begin with cataclysmic natural events at 6:00 PM around New Zealand and progress around the world every hour. That means at 6:00 PM tomorrow, no matter where you are in the world, you can expect earthquakes and other disasters. The rapture will kick off shortly thereafter with only a chosen few being taken to heaven. If you&8217;re still on earth after the rapture, you can expect Armageddon &8211; total destruction of everyone and everything on the planet. By October 21, 2011 it will all be over and the earth will reportedly be completely destroyed.

The Holy Bible, in Matthew 24:36, says, &8220;No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.&8221; Apparently, however, Brother Camping figured out the calculations necessary to determine when the end is nigh. According to Camping, the rapture begins exactly 7,000 years after Noah&8217;s flood, and that day happens to be May 21, 2011.

Roy Speckhardt: Rapture Fever

In preparation for May 21, some Americans have quit their jobs, settled their affairs, and arranged for their care of their earth-bound pets, for they believe this Saturday is the Rapture.

For those of us outside one particular extremist Christian circle, May 21st is expected to be just another Saturday. There are errands to be run and friends to see, sleep to catch up on and bills to be tackled. (And for Washington D.C. residents so inclined, the first strategic summit of the Secular Coalition for America is being held.) But in preparation for May 21, some Americans have quit their jobs, settled their affairs, and arranged for their care of their earth-bound pets, for they believe this Saturday is the Rapture.

The Rapture refers to a passage in the New Testament, 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17, describing what is also referred to as End Times, when God calls all good Christians home to Heaven, leaving the non-believers to an Armageddon plagued planet.

This doomsday calculation has been most loudly touted by Harold Camping, founder of Family Radio Worldwide, who also predicted the Rapture to fall up on the earth in 1994. He was wrong then and he's wrong now, but followers continue to line up behind his word, preparing for the final countdown. Why?

May 21 is Judgment Day: Christian group

On its website, Family Radio says May 21 as Judgment Day is “derived solely from evidence. These proofs alert believers that May 21st of 2011 is the date Christ will.

Billboards are popping up around the globe, including in major Canadian cities, proclaiming May 21 as Judgment Day. “Cry mightily unto GOD for HIS mercy,” says one of the mounted signs from Family Radio, a California-based sectarian Christian group that is sending one of its four travelling caravans of believers into Vancouver and Calgary within the next 10 days.

Family Radio's website is blunt in its prediction of Judgment Day and the rolling earthquake that will mark the beginning of the end. “The Bible guarantees it!” the site proclaims, under a passage from the book of Ezekiel, which says “blow the trumpet warn the people.”

End-of-the-world predictions or suggestions of other calamities have been made for centuries. Here's a look at some of them:

May 21 Judgement Day Details Revealed by Rev. Gather

Friday, May 13th, 2011
may 21st judgement day may 21st judgement day
may 21st judgement day may 21st judgement day

Reverend Camping of Family Radio has revealed exactly what to expect on May 21 Judgement Day. At 6 p.m. local time, on May 21, 2011, where ever you live…

At 6 p.m. local time, on May 21, 2011, where ever you live, there will be a tremendous earthquake. This earthquake will be like no other. The earthquake alerts the world that The Rapture is starting. The earthquake will be so powerful that it will open the graves and the dead will rise up, and the saved dead will ascend up into heaven with the living that have been saved. Reverend Camping will be viewing the Judgement Day as it's happening live on TV and listening on the radio. Reverend Camping says it will start in Fiji and New Zealand, and you'll be able to view it as it's coming around to you, because this will be big news, of course. It's a little difficult to understand exactly how we're going to see it on TV, if the earthquakes will be as abundant as graphic as he states, since the TV stations will surely be out of operation, but we can take his word for it, if we wish.

If you're not saved in the Rapture, then you're going to be in a pickle. Only the “true believers” will be saved. About 7 billion people will be in a “tremendous, terrible situation.” Millions of people will die, and there will not even be enough people alive to bury them. The whole world will be in chaos, and suffering terribly, states Reverend Camping. The suffering will continue until October 21st, which Camping says God will completely destroy the Earth.

Reverend Camping believes this with all his heart and soul. He won't even entertain the possibility that it won't happen. If you've ever heard him speak, you know that he can be quite adamant about this. He was quoted in New York Magazine as saying, “It. Is. Going. To. Happen.” Case closed, no questions about it what-so-ever.
